PDP Records Landslide Victory in CR Council Polls

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has won 18 chairmanship and 196 councillorship positions in the just concluded local government council elections which, the Cross River State Electoral Commission (CROSIEC) said the APC, LP, YPP and NNPP also took part.

The chairman of the electoral umpire, Dr Mike Ushie, while announcing the result on Sunday evening, debunked insinuations from some quarters that the entire results were written and compiled by CROSIEC, saying he was happy that at last, the Commission had done its best to conduct free, fair and credible polls.

He said: “All the results emanated from the field, our duty is to declare the result and issue certificates of return to the winners, which is what we have done here today.”

Our reporter gathered that the election which witnessed fair turnout in many polling units had only the PDP candidates as sole participants. The lingering crisis in the APC and near non-visibility of other political parties may have also contributed to the poor performance the parties recorded in the elections.

The Returning Officer, who incidentally was the CROSIEC Chairman, said the PDP won in all the 18 local government councils which are Municipality, Bakassi, Akpabuyo, Akamkpa, Etung, Calabar South Ikom, Obubra, Odukpani and Yakurr.

Other local councils which the party also won with landslide included Biase, Abi, Boki, Ogoja, Obudu, Yala, Obanlikwu and Bekwarra council areas.

A Calabar resident, Utum Ubi, who spoke shortly after the announcement of result, believed that except for the lingering crisis which has bedeviled the APC for almost three years now, the party would have given the ruling PDP a good run for its money.

“APC entered the election with a divided house. While John Ochala’s faction pulled out of the election, the Etim John’s faction which took part did not field candidates in many of the council areas and had no funds to mobilize voters, including their own polling agents,” he stated.

The announced results indicated that for Chairmanship position, Linus Bassey-Etim emerged winner for Akamkpa LG, Akpabuyo LG was won by Emmanuel Offiong-Bassey, Bakassi LG won by Iyadim Amboni-Iyadim and Calabar Municipal Council won by Eke Effiong-Nta.

Others are Calabar South LG chairmanship seat won by Esther Edet-Bassey, Etung LG won by Etuk John-Nkom, Ikom LG won by Egumi Kingsley, Obubra LG won by Dr Bassey Agara, while Justina Joseph-Edem won in Odukpani LG and Obeten Ofem-Ebri won in Yakurr.

Abi LG was won by Riman Farator, Dr Emeka Josephat clinched the Bekwarra LG seat, John Eshan Ewa won in Boki, Biase won by Mrs Ada Charles Egwu and Obanliku was won by Inde Magaret.

Others are Obudu LG won by Ewe Boniface Eraye, Ogoja LG won by Ishabor Emmanuel and Yala LG won by Ogbeh Friday. All the winners were of the PDP.
