Oba of Benin’s visit’ll enhance our unity – Obong’s aide

Otuekong Francis Edet, media /publicity chief to the Obong of Calabar, His Eminence, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V has said that the visit of the Oba of Benin kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare  II to Efik kingdom would enhance the bond of unity existing between the Efik and Benin kingdoms.

Edet, who spoke to our reporter shortly after the arrival of the Benin monarch at the Margaret Ekpo Int’l airport, Calabar, Friday evening, disclosed that the purpose of the Oba’s visit was to say ‘Thank You’ to the Calabar Monarch and his people and that the kingdom was very excited for the show of solidarity.

“The visit will enhance the cordial relationship that had existed between the two kingdoms in the past three hundred (300) years and we are grateful for the show of solidarity and unity.

“Before his coronation, the Oba invited first class traditional leaders across the nation to witness his coronation. His Eminence, the Obong of Calabar and many members of the Etubom Traditional Council were in Benin to honour the invitation. Few years after, the Oba felt he should go around the country to say ‘thank you for honouring me.”

Explaining  further that the Obong of Calabar and Oba of Benin were designated first class natural rulers and treaty kings, the Spokesman noted that  Oba’s visit would build synergy between the two old kingdoms and cement existing bond of friendship between Calabar and Benin.

Otuekong Edet said a formal reception of Oba Ewuare II by Edidem Abasi Otu V would take place at the Obong’s palace on Saturday, January 11, 2020 and that a royal banquet in honour of the visiting monarch would be at Adiabo, the country home of the Obong, on Sunday January 12 .

According to him, there were slight adjustments to the Saturday’s event. He explained that instead of the formal reception taking place by 9.30am of Saturday as initially planned, Oba Ewuare II would be received by 12.30 pm same day.

“We regret to inform members of the Etubom Traditional Council and indeed all Cross Riverians that the time of the Oba’s visit to the palace of the Obong of Calabar has been shifted from 9.30 am to 12.30pm on Saturday. Please endeavour to be there,” Otuekong Edet stated.

Meanwhile, our reporter, who monitored the arrival of Oba Ewuare II said he touched down the  Margaret Ekpo airport by 6.55 pm and was received by Etuboms Traditional Council, other royal fathers and dignitaries before being driven in a royal convoy to his hotel.
