New President Pledges to Reposition NPPAN

The newly elected president of National Palm Produce Association of Nigeria (NPPAN), Mr. Bassey Essien, has promised to re-position the association so as to strengthen the growth of palm produce in Nigeria.

Speaking shortly after the 2019 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of NPPAN, Essien said in order to achieve the vision of the new 12-man executive committee, sweeping reforms would be instituted for maximum results.

According to him, the new executive committee under his leadership “shall be based on people oriented policies directed to the full benefits of members. Far reaching reforms shall be introduced to bring NPPAN in tune with other related sister bodies as well as the ministry”.

He said, “it is our humble and passionate interest and resolve of the present executive to serve and re-position NPPAN for the best interest, growth and development of NPPAN”.

The new executive, which also has Mr. Adetunji Ibikunle as national secretary, reportedly came on board after the expiration of the tenure of the immediate past national executive which was led by Mr. Henry Olatujoye.

In was further learnt that the Olatujoye-led executive committee, whose tenure had long elapsed, was elected for a three year term in accordance with the NPPAN constitution in 2011, but remained in office till few days ago when the new executive was inaugurated.

Sources close to NPPAN secretariat disclosed that before the election, there was the Associations stakeholders’ meeting/ministerial briefing with FACAN and ministry representatives and that the meeting resolved that a new executive be put in place to avoid any vacuum.

“At the end of the ministerial briefing, it became expedient for the AGM general assembly to appoint a member to pilot the affairs of the AGM since the former president and his executives were absent from the AGM summoned by them.

“It was clearly established that leadership vacuum has been created, and it was most expedient and important to right the wrongs of illegality. It was further noted that waiting from now to December 2019 is logically impossible in line with the provision of the NPPAN constitution, at this point FACAN and Ministry officials advised that the provision of the NPPAN constitution is supreme and as such the constitution must be followed to the later

“Arising from the above, Chief (Barr) Morisson C. Onunu was dully appointed by AGM members after the normal motion nominating and seconding his appointment as the Proterm President/Chief Electoral Officer to pilot the affairs of the AGM and conduct its national elections into national offices of NPPAN.  The minutes of the AGM 2019 including the elections held and reported therein represent the clear position of the AGM,” our source narrated.

It was further gathered that the former National President, Olatujoye and his executive committee members, excluding the Chairman of Osun State, were all absent at the meeting for their personal reasons
