Last week’s assassination attempt on the life of the State Security Adviser for the Southern Senatorial District, Mr Ani Esin, has drawn the anger of leaders and people of Bakassi local government area who, on Thursday at Ekpri Ikang, called on the police to fish out the perpetrators.
In a press statement read by member representing the Bakassi in the State House of Assembly, Hon (Dr) Ekpo Ekpo Bassey, who was flanked by other leaders, the leaders said “We are gathered as community leaders, political association, brothers, sisters and friends of Hon Ani Esin, the state security adviser (South), to thank God for sparing his life to be able to see today and by His grace, and many more years to come.
“It is now public knowledge that in the wee hours of March 12, 2019, an evil plan made from the pit of hell and executed by criminals and their sponsors to assassinate Hon Ani Esin was carried out at his residence in Akai Efa area of Calabar Municipality.
“This blood-thirsty gang broke into the home of our brother, subjected him to untold brutality, with severe machete cut and gun shots, all intended to put an end to his life. But the Almighty God prevailed and ensured that their evil plan was defeated.
“We as leaders of the Bakassi people strongly condemn this gruesome attack and the criminal attempt to take the life of a community leader and public servant with rich pedigree of service and positive interventions for the cause of Bakassi and indeed the State.
“There is no doubt in our minds that this dastardly act was designed to silence Hon Ani Esin for his principled stand for truth on issues concerning Bakassi and the politics of Cross River State to deliver his party’s candidates in the just concluded elections, it would have amounted to the greatest injustice to deprive him of the fruits of his lbour, through an organized termination of his life, God forbids!
“Whatever the motives of these criminals, we call on the security agencies to spare no effort in bringing the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice.”
Asked whether the assassination attempt was not unconnected to an alleged N20 million purportedly given by the State government for leaders of the area for the elections and which was allegedly not released by the SSA South, the leaders described the rumour as blatant lies as, according to them, no such funds were ever given to Esin for anybody.
Dr Eneyo Eyo, one of the leaders who also spoke, said the perpetrators of the attempted assassination wanted to destabilize Bakassi, “but they won’t succeed in disrupting the peace of the area.”
The disclosed that Esin was currently recuperating in an unnamed hospital in Calabar, and tha ked the Governor and the security agencies for their prompt intervention to ensure Esin was not assassinated.
